The Gold Belt up Phantom Canyon Road became the first
to arrive in the district July 1, 1894. Three days later the Midland Terminal
made its way into the district as a spur from the main line of the Colorado
Midland to Leadville. The Colorado Springs & Cripple Creek District
Railway, known as the Short Line, arrived in the district in 1900 via the
south side of Pikes Peak, offering the shortest route between the gold
camp and Colorado Springs 46 miles below.

During November, 1914, miners working on the twelfth level discovered the legendary Cresson Vug, which in four weeks produced $1.2 million in gold (1915 prices). For the rest of the decade, the Cresson operated under a new company, the Cresson Consolidated Gold Mining and Milling Company, with A.E. Carlton, Spencer Penrose and Roelof as major stockholders. Under Carlton's ownership the Cresson remained an active, leading producer of the District until 1961. Today the Cresson is the largest surface gold mine in Colorado and is still producing a wealth of ore. These detailed drawings show how turn-of-the-century miners sorted by hand higher grade ore from lower grade ore. They also include historical descriptions of the process and details of the Cresson Mine structures. 22x33: $39.95 (plus sales tax; shipping and handling) Add 1 to Basket 11x17: $17.95 (plus sales tax; shipping and handling) Add 1 to Basket
